In order to avoid awkward silence you have to make sure that you can keep conversation going , but most importantly an interesting conversation , one that  actually  make the girl engage and wants to continue talking to you and there is one converstion topic (they like to talk about themselves) ,so get them talking about them, showing who they are as a person, ask them deep questions to keep things going, for exemple (ask them about the last thing they did was really awsome) ,get them talking ,now remember to keep this conversation smoothly and make sure interjecting , don't just keep asking them questions but make statement about what there talking about  in order to prevent the invterview mode , likely the reason why you're not able to keep the conversation going is because you  do not listen to what they say ,which is the number one most important thing you need to do if you want to avoid awkward silences , most people think in their head what they want to say next , and suddenly the girl stop talking, and you had no idea what she said and you stuck in silence , so listen closely to what she says so you work off of her to talk more about the topic , add in your 2 sentence (ask her a question , tell a story ...) or bring a new topic that's connected to the one that you already discuss it .
